Welcome to Canada! Here, win the Tri-Cities VolunteerFest Grand Prize!
Posted Nov 03, 2014 by
Every year the Tri-Cities VolunteerFest brings together people and organizations to start new volunteer relationships. And every year Community Volunteer Connections gets to pick one lucky Festival-goer to win our grand prize: a $500 shopping spree at Coquitlam Centre.
18-year-old Ramilla Shah is this year’s winner, and she is a fascinating young woman.
Ramilla and her family arrived in Coquitlam from Pakistan only a few months ago, in April. Ramilla has big plans for her new life in Canada. In January she starts at Douglas College in their Criminology program. She is working towards becoming a lawyer and a politician.
These are pretty specific dreams for an 18-year-old, but Ramilla has experiences beyond her years. Over the past few years, Ramilla volunteered with the United Nations, providing translation assistance for refugees from Afghanistan. According to the UN Refugee Agency, Pakistan hosts 1.6 million registered Afghan refugees, the largest number of long-term refugees in the world. Ramilla speaks five languages, including English, Pashto and Urdu, so she was well placed to help.
Ramilla has already started volunteering in Coquitlam, helping on the administration desk at S.U.C.C.E.S.S.
Ramilla and her family checked out a lot of great volunteer opportunities at the 2014 Tri-Cities VolunteerFest, and are considering their options. Cross your fingers your Volunteer Program gets picked!
